Native to southern Asia, the Formosan subterranean termite has been introduced to warmer states of the US, where it became a serious pest of timber and constructions.
The colony shown on this live stream originated in China and was transported to Prague in 1964. Currently, it is held in Robert Hanus Lab cultures with fifteen other species of termites from different continents. The colony feeds on spruce wood and contains several tens of thousands individuals.
The stream shows workers, searching for food, eventually building, accompanied by soldiers, the defenders of the colony.

Tento druh má původní areál rozšíření v jižní Asii, byl však zavlečen do teplejších států USA, kde se stal významným škůdcem dřeva a dřevěných staveb.
Kolonie na tomto live streamu pochází z Číny a do Prahy byla přivezena v roce 1964. Laboratorní chovy ve skupině Roberta Hanuse obývá spolu s patnácti dalšími druhy termitů z různých světadílů. Kolonie se živí smrkovým dřevem a obsahuje desítky tisíc jedinců.
